Even if a great sage tells me that the purpose of my existence is “serving the earth by becoming a bridge for certain higher energies” that does not motivate me to work. So, the issue of what is my aim and what motivates me to achieve it remains.
I understand what you are saying and I think everyone has that question at one point. For me, it is a malaise that occurs throughout my life, strong at some point and weaker at others. It is that inner quiet voice or longing that has caused me to seek various paths and teachers. To answer the last part of your question, the motivation has to be within, along with the recognition of something outside yourself. For me, this is a life process, not something I can pick up and train and become an expert. It is a spiral type of thing, without wins or loses. If you ask the question, I believe you know the answer.
